History of hydrogen-in-titanium standards

When titanium ingot manufacturing processes became economically viable, scientists began to produce alloys suitable for use in aircraft. It soon became clear that low hydrogen content was critical to prevent embrittlement of finished products, especially titanium sheet metal.

When the first instruments were produced to do analysis of hydrogen for safety-critical components to track embrittlement issues, they had to be calibrated. Many calibration standards were made from lots of material which failed quality inspection, having high hydrogen content.

ASTM developed E1447, a Standard Test Method for the determination of Hydrogen in Titanium and Titanium Alloys by Inert Gas Fusion Thermal Conductivity/Infrared Detection Method –a method for calibrating analysis instruments (called determinators) and analyzing samples for the determination of the interstitial gas content of elemental hydrogen.

For some years, 'failed' lots were plenteous -and became candidates for Certified Reference Material standards (if samples proved to be homogeneous) because of their high hydrogen content. With the advancement of titanium ingot and sheet metal production technologies, particularly when all producers were processing in vacuum, their failures were summarily eliminated. As a result, the world's stock of 'failure' lots dried up.

By 2011, there were few, if any hydrogen reference materials for instrument calibration on the market with less than 15% RSD (the ± percentage a measurement result value varies from the certified value); many were more than 20% RSD. This reality created a critical situation for the quality analysis of the world's safety-critical titanium products.

This is when White Horse Technical Services (WHTS) was approached and asked to research and develop a refinement of NIST's process for dosing hydrogen into the titanium material, which did not produce sufficiently homogeneous results (NIST had to chip the material and mix it up to achieve good homogeneity).

WHTS understood the need for high quality hydrogen-in-titanium CRM Pin Standards and engaged in the R&D necessary to meet this need. After designing and building the equipment necessary to produce a premium product, WHTS was contracted by NIST to supply a replacement of their chipped material SRM2453 (Hydrogen: 114 mg/kg ± 5 mg/kg @4.4%RSD) which was running out of stock.

WHTS Developed refinements to the NIST procedure and assembled a process line for the production of high precision hydrogen-in-titanium pin standards. Once the candidate material was produced, White Horse Reference Materials (WHRM) test laboratory was commissioned to work in tandem with NIST scientists for the SRM's characterization. The material was found to meet NIST's acceptance specifications, and with full characterization SRM2453a (126.8 mg/kg ± 2.5 mg/kg @2.0%RSD) came to market.

At the same time, WHTS developed its ISO 17024 Laboratory Quality and Guide 34 RMP -Reference Materials Producer (now ISO/IEC 17034) Quality Management System.

The WHRM test laboratory, utilizes its own robust characterization protocol in sample analysis using a variety of determinator instruments for the elemental analysis of the inorganic interstitial gas components important to scientists, chemists, engineers and producers of titanium ingot and processed components used in aerospace and various other industries.

Drawn from ASTM E1447 Standard Test Method for Hydrogen, ASTM E1409 Standard Test Method for Oxygen and Nitrogen, WHRM developed an Internal Standard Test Method with n=50 sample analyses and Gas Dose comparison to the SI unit to aid in the establishment of top-tier Estimated True Value assessments. WHTS continues to produce lots of hydrogen in titanium pin material for NIST (SRM 2454a to replace SRM 2454a is delivered and being characterized), utilizing its R&D to improve this technology and expand into other processes. In 2018, WHRM introduced to the world market its technology for world-wide distribution of high precision, precisely dosed hydrogen-in-titanium Certified Reference Material (CRM) Pin Standards.
